How to print this page

In the past I've taught how to clean up your computer. If you like doing it manually, check out this page. But if you are as lazy as I am, just download & install a couple of programs for free & let them do the job.

First, go to http://www.ccleaner.com/download and download the program called "ccleaner". Install it and run it. You can make the choices of what to delete. I just delete everything but you may not want to get rid of some items. Look the list over carefully.

Second, go to http://www.iobit.com/ and download 2 programs "Smart Defrag" and "Advanced System Care Free". Install them & run them.

Notes:

1. You should be running an active and updated antivirus program. AVG and Avast still provide free programs. If you use a paid program like McAfee or Norton, that's OK too. if you don't leave your computer on 24/7 be sure you update the antivirus program regularly. If you leave your machine on, the program should keep itself updated assuming you are on a broadband Internet service.

2. Run the defrag last. You can use the one in windows, but I like SmartDefrag because it runs in the background and keeps you defragged.
2016 update: if you have an SSD drive, do not defrag it. Look on line for discussions about defragging SSD drives.
